Description

Zapin is a traditional Malay dance that originated from the Middle East, specifically influenced by Arab and Persian culture. It was introduced to the Malay Archipelago by Muslim missionaries in the 14th century and has since evolved into a significant part of Malay cultural heritage, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.

Traditionally, Zapin was performed by male dancers in pairs or groups, accompanied by live music featuring instruments such as the gambus (lute), rebana (drum), and accordion. Over time, female dancers also became involved, leading to more diverse and elaborate performances. The dance movements are graceful yet rhythmic, characterized by intricate footwork and coordinated gestures that reflect discipline and elegance.

Zapin is often performed during cultural festivals, weddings, and official ceremonies, serving as a symbol of Malay identity and heritage. Different regions have developed their own unique styles, such as Zapin Johor, Zapin Sarawak, and Zapin Pahang, each with distinct movements and musical variations.

Today, Zapin continues to thrive, blending tradition with modern influences while maintaining its deep-rooted cultural significance.
